The MA in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at New York University (NYU) Steinhardt provides education and clinical training for students seeking to enter the field of mental health counseling and work for community centers, university counseling programs, mental health centers, hospitals, HIV and AIDS outreach programs, and substance abuse treatment centers. The 60-credit program is registered by New York State as a licensure-qualifying program in mental health counseling. Upon graduation, students may obtain a limited permit to practice. Full licensure is contingent upon the completion of 3,000 hours of post-master's supervised experience and a successful score on the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor exam.

The Department of Applied Psychology houses four main centers: (1) the Child and Family Policy Center; (2) the Center for Health, Identity, Behavior, and Prevention Studies; (3) the Center for Research on Culture, Development, and Education; and (4) the Institute for Human Development and Social Change. In addition, the department's computer and measurement laboratories are multipurpose resources for student and faculty use. The measurement laboratory houses a collection of educational and psychological tests and reference books containing critical reviews of tests. Also housed in the laboratory are reference books on measurement, research, and statistics.
